This week's poem: "All the same"

"All the same" is the poem's title. All the same as in nevertheless or as in all similar, or both? There are many questions about this pleasant poem. Is mahogany really the colour of strength as opposed to pink? And is pink frigid? Read and decide.

ALL THE SAME
(by Barolong Seboni)

Me mahogany
colour of strength
mopped and
topped
by kinky curls
of Kgalagadi
ancestry
but hairy
all the same
nostrils wide
Receptive
like antelope
of the savannas
nose broad
trait
of species
negroid
but nosey
all the same
heart
shape of the continent
of people
denied
people
cheated
people
mistreated
people
robbed
people
rising
haven risen
able to
feel
love
need
all the same--

you frigid pink
blanc mange
crowned by sisal
freely flowing
to the nape
coppertoned
in the glint
of the golden orb
regal
in the domain
of sky blue
eyes
emerald
treasures
of lands
forgotten
lips
ruby of empires
of antiquity
heart
shape of new
generations
wanting
to understand
to want –
wanting
all the same
all other things
being equal
do you
want
to be
my friend?

Recognizing the beauty in all of us, the sameness of our desires and needs, is the bridge to friendship.

I think you're absolutely right, Annie. And that is one of the reasons this poem is powerful.

kai c,

Powerful is the word. Simplicity may very well be the other word. Cheers.

Very powerful statement. But how many of us understand this?

Do you know in my own country a dusky skin colour like mine is looked down upon?

Why should I need to defend my skin colour or whatever that is makes me different from others?

yes.

I appreciate how the words drip, cascading into one another in hues of beauty.

very powerful indeed.

Wonderful powerful poem. We're all connected and need to be connected more closely.
(ironically, "emerald eyes" is the name of my blog.. well, maybe not that ironically...)

I think it took the poet great courage to write these two mirror images. He sees the beauty in pink, even though he could instead have seen misery, corruption, and hipocracy. There are so many ways for a human being to grow up feeling worthless. The narrator rises above those feelings.

I enjoyed his description of mahogany strength and beauty. It made me appreciate dark beauty all the more. The comparison of the continent of Africa to the shape of the human heart I also enjoyed.

GReat poem. Thanks for sharing!

This is a beautiful, beautiful poem. Black or white, we all bleed.

Indeed, we do, Tafsiri. Indeed, we do.
