I WANT TO WRITE
(by Margaret Walker)

I want to write
I want to write the songs of my people.
I want to hear them singing melodies in the dark.
I want to catch the last floating strains from their sob-torn
throats.
I want to frame their dreams into words; their souls into
notes.
I want to catch their sunshine laughter in a bowl;
fling dark hands to a darker sky
and fill them full of stars
then crush and mix such lights till they become
a mirrored pool of brilliance in the dawn.

I have labelled this poem "everlasting image." I'd like to say why.
The rest of the poem from "I want to catch their sunshine laughter in a bowl" is a celebration in everlasting imagery.
I describe everlasting imagery as that picture that will always remain with you, that when you want to use, you inadvertently know that it belongs to someone else. It's an image that knocks you senseless with mirth.
I don't know. What do you make of Ms Walker's poem?
This poem resonates with me quite deeply. Its a well-timed choice for me and my class Ret... :)
Its that hope that swells deep within this poem, that captures it for me - hope for a better future that all parents wish for their children, just like this poet wishes for her people. Such a nurturing and calm piece.
Such a lovely poem, Rethabile, speaks of her people's suffering and their delight. She shows us her strength and her beauty.
This is beautiful. I was moved by the imagery in this piece. Walker blends the natural world and humanity so well. This is like a fresh rain after an oppressively hot day.
Thank you.
i like it.
beautiiful
I love Margaret Walker. I had the pleasure of meeting her in 1989. I'll never forget that day. I did a post on it a couple of years ago. The poem is beautiful and a testament of her love for her people. Thanks for this.
blondie,
This poem is magnificent, and I hope you can use it with your class.
robin,
She does indeed. She's a great writer with great messages.
getzapped,
The imagery did something to me, too. Those last lines are killer poetry.
kai c.
You said it!
Stephen,
What a great person to have met! Next time I meet someone like that I'll touch them, and hope it rubs off.
Simply beautiful.
Thank you.
This is a very beautiful poem. Really nice.
It is, Ruthibelle. Ms Walker really could write.
Thanks.
